Queensboro Bridge's 100th Birthday May 31, 2009

May 31, 2009 New York City - The Queensboro Bridge celebrated it's 100th birthday with Fireworks by Grucci. Often overshadowed by its famous downriver sibling, the Brooklyn Bridge, the 7,449-foot span links Manhattan and Queens and led to explosive growth in the borough dominated by farmland at the dawn of the 20th century.

Also known as the 59th Street Bridge, it was built from 1901 to 1909 and spans New York's East River connecting Queens to Manhattan. It's been immortalized by a Simon and Garfunkel tune and featured in Woody Allen films.

Unlike other East River crossings, which are all suspension bridges, it uses, what was then, a unique cantilever design. Fireworks by Grucci lit up the night sky with a colorful display that focused on the bridge's 100th birthday.
